# AppVis™

### Process Overview

For further details see [a description of AppVis in Highlight.](https://support.highlight.net/help/status/appvis)

Only Cisco devices are supported.

Here is an overview of the steps required to set up AppVis in Highlight:

1. Having Flow reporting capability is a pre-requisite. Follow the [process to enable Flow](https://support.highlight.net/help/getting_started/enable_flow)
2. (See warning below) [Configure each router](https://support.highlight.net/help/device_setup/flow#appvis) for the specific Flow template needed for AppVis
3. Install NBAR2 Protocol Pack on all devices involved in AppVis data collection\
Note: NBAR2 is not a pre-requisite as AppVis can use NBAR standard classification, but NBAR has significantly fewer signatures than NBAR2. A signature is a classification of an application.
4. If using NBAR2 ensure that the router has an "advipservices" or "data" license otherwise the router will use standard NBAR classification even if a Protocol Pack is loaded. Licence details are available from [Reporting inventory](https://support.highlight.net/help/reporting/inventory#column_headers)
5. Contact your Service Provider to enable AppVis on a folder, and [set a folder](https://support.highlight.net/help/admin/create_tree#edit_a_folder) as the application domain
6. Edit the watch in Highlight to [add AppVis settings](https://support.highlight.net/help/admin/appvis) via the Edit Watch Autodiscovery and Applications tabs
7. Add [DSCP values to the CCD](https://support.highlight.net/help/admin/ccd#appvis_requirements) to provide AppVis analysis of QoS Classes
8. Give permission "Manage Applications" to nominated users so they can [Manage AppVis application groups](https://support.highlight.net/help/status/appvis#groups)

If results do not appear as expected, then follow our [AppVis Troubleshooting](https://support.highlight.net/help/troubleshoot/appvis) procedures.

On the router, Flow and NBAR (which are required for AppVis) can cause high CPU load so every AppVis monitored device needs to be adequately powered for the volume of traffic expected.\
If you are planning to enable Flow/NBAR on a number of devices we suggest first selecting the busiest device for each model to check it can handle the additional CPU load.
