AP Channel Load

Overview

This section shows graphically the channel load for the selected time period (day, week, month) and date. It also shows congestion if available.

When viewed for today only, each section on the Details page gives an indication if it is currently alerting and thus impacting the associated heat tile colour. Find out more about colour coding.

Channel Load description

2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel load charts show the utilisation of the WiFi channel (the percentage of time the channel is busy – either from other devices transmitting or interference). A vertical bar is drawn on the chart for each poll (typically every five minutes). As utilisation approaches the threshold, the vertical bar shows green through amber then red and maroon when the threshold is exceeded.

Threshold

The custom defined threshold is indicated with a thin horizontal purple line and shown in purple text in the right margin. The threshold value is 50% by default but can be altered by Admin users. See WiFi Alerting Thresholds for more information. If configured, an alert can be sent when channel load exceeds the threshold.

Vertical axis: Scaling adjusts depending on data

Threshold ( 50% ): If the adjusted vertical axis means the threshold line is not visible then a purple arrow is shown indicating the threshold is above the visible chart area.

Horizontal axis: Adjusts according to the selected time period to show "hours" in day view and "days" in week and month views; redraws if the time zone is changed at the top right of the Details page

Time period

Highlight displays the values for each data point in the time period:

Day

Shows multiple data points per hour (one for each polling period, usually one to five minutes)

Week

Shows 24 data points per day (every hour), Maximum for each hour is shown

Month

Shows 6 data points per day (every 4 hours), Maximum for each 4 hour period is shown

For any time period, hover on a point to see date, timestamp, channel load and congestion as a percentage.

Congestion

Congestion represents the number of retransmitted or failed frames expressed as a percentage of frames to be sent. The calculation is manufacturer dependent and based on the statistics available from the WiFi devices. Congestion is not calculated unless traffic volumes are more than one frame per second. Colours on the congestion line are:

Green

Values are at or below the threshold

Red blips

Values exceed the threshold

Grey

No samples or congestion of 0%

Threshold

The threshold for congestion is set to 12% by default and can be altered by Admin users. This indicates how congested the AP radio networks are and uses the percent of send attempts that require retransmissions as the metric. The custom threshold is shown in purple text in the right margin. See WiFi Alerting Thresholds for more information. If configured, an alert can be sent when congestion exceeds the threshold.

Zoom options

There are two methods to zoom in on charts: drag and click. Find out more about zoom options.

Background colours

Grey backgrounds indicate non-business hours and purple backgrounds indicate maintenance periods. Find out more about background colours.
