SD-WAN Tunnels

Overview

This page describes the graphics available for SD-WAN tunnels on the Details page.

For Fortinet, tunnels are aggregated into a single tunnel representation. Highlight is focused on showing a location talking to another destination location, so rather than showing the technical components, we represent the information in a way non-technical users understand - location to location.

Colour coding

When viewed for today only, each section on the Details page gives an indication if it is currently alerting and thus impacting the associated heat tile colour. Find out more about colour coding.

Traffic Load

Tunnel Traffic Load

Options

Percent/Actual

Actual: Show volume of data received or sent (Percent is not available on tunnels so Actual is selected and cannot be changed)

Standard/MinMax toggle - week and month only Standard: Selected by default, shows an area chart using the maximum value as the data point MinMax: Shows an average point and a vertical gradient bar for the minimum and maximum values recorded for the time period

Axes and controls

Download the traffic information to a CSV file, read more about the Download option

Vertical axis: Shows "bps" and scales depending on the volume

Horizontal axis: Adjusts according to the selected time period to show "hours" in day view and "days" in week and month views; redraws if the time zone is changed at the top right of the Details page. See Zoom options for methods to zoom in on the data.

Time period

Highlight displays the load value for each data point in the time period:

Day

Shows multiple data points per hour (one for each polling period, usually one to five minutes)

Week

Shows 24 data points per day (every hour), in MinMax view, Average for each hour is shown along with MinMax values

Month

Shows 6 data points per day (every 4 hours), in MinMax view, Average for each 4 hour period is shown along with MinMax values

Day view and Week/Month view with "Standard" selected - hover on a point to see date, timestamp and Max for In and Out as actual values

Week/Month view with "MinMax" selected - hover on a point to see date, timestamp, then Avg, Min and Max for In and Out as actual values

These settings will be remembered when you next log in:

  • Whether the panel is collapsed or expanded

  • The status of any toggles

Summary

The summary shows the total values, peak and 95th percentages for in and out during the selected time period

Total: Shows the accumulated volume of traffic for the time period displayed, calculated by adding the volumes from the polled samples.

Peak (Actual): The bits per second value reported is from the individual sample with the highest throughput for the time period displayed. It will be seen as the highest point on the chart. The Highlight peak therefore is the sample with the largest volume, divided by the number of seconds between samples (typically 180 or 60). .

95th percentile: The highest recorded value during the time period ignoring the top 5%, read more about the 95th percentile and why it's useful

Last sample: Only shown for today, this is the last recorded value (the last good sample) for today with ? shown if no data was received

Line Availability

A purple background on the chart indicates a maintenance window. Tunnels in maintenance do not send alerts, change the colour of heat tiles nor decrement availability figures. See background colours for examples.

Similar to Highlight's Line Health Availability, coloured blips, with the meanings shown below, are drawn on the chart.

Blip Colour

Red

Tunnel down

Blue

API call failure - recovered (patched from Mustard to Blue)

Mustard

API call failure - ongoing

Decrements stability and turns watch amber/red

Discontinued tunnels and performance tests

Previously discovered tunnels may disappear from the SD-WAN network temporarily or permanently. These are deleted from Highlight automatically after 31 days - contact us to change this retention period. Discontinued tunnels are labelled on the Details page.

If a discontinued tunnel or test reappears on the SD-WAN network during the retention period, then these labels are removed and the item resumes collecting and displaying data. If a discontinued tunnel or test does not reappear and the retention period ends, then the item is deleted from Highlight.

Zoom options

There are two methods to zoom in on charts: drag and click. Find out more about zoom options.

Background colours

Grey backgrounds indicate non-business hours and purple backgrounds indicate maintenance periods. Find out more about background colours.

Data not returned by vendor

Vendors differ in what information they provide. Panels on the Details page may be permanently collapsed because no information is being returned by the controller and so there are no chart values to display.
